UST Project SERN In the case of SERN, being a network rather than a municipality, the self-assessment questionnaire workshop was conducted by the Municipality of Bertinoro, an associate partner in the project and a SERN member. Participating in this workshop was insightful, as it highlighted how—even though Bertinoro already had its own developed strategy for promoting sustainable tourism—the use of the questionnaire, which incorporates all 17 SDGs, ensured that no aspect was overlooked. This included dimensions not usually associated directly with tourism but which should indeed be integrated into tourism planning. WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM APPLYING THE TOOLS OURSELVES – REFLECTIONS FROM RUNNING THE WORKSHOPS THE JOURNEY OF “SELF-DISCOVERY” THROUGH THE UST PROJECT For SERN, the journey through the UST project has led to valuable new insights, particularly regarding the essential steps required when working towards sustainable tourism. Among these is the importance of continuous dialogue and active involvement of all relevant local stakeholders. This message has been a central theme in discussions and dissemination efforts shared with other SERN members. Beyond these project-specific reflections, the focus on sustainability has extended to SERN’s overall operations. Greater consideration is now given when organising events, meetings, and seminars—with deliberate choices such as selecting eco-certified hotels, offering meals made from local ingredients, using reusable dishware, and offsetting emissions from air travel. This broadened perspective is now influencing all of SERN’s activities, not just those directly related to tourism. THE WAY FORWARD SERN’s next steps will be to continue working on the themes of sustainable tourism by disseminating the tools and materials produced by the UST project and further engaging its network of municipalities. This will be achieved through webinars, seminars, and direct support to its members, both in Sweden and Italy, in developing new project proposals that build on and extend the work carried out by the UST partners. 33 cardet WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM APPLYING THE TOOLS OURSELVES – REFLECTIONS FROM RUNNING THE WORKSHOPS The UST project achieved its main objective by delivering all workshops / seminars and piloting activities which trained European municipal staff for sustainable tourism planning.
