1 FINAL HANDBOOK Falköping Municipality WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM APPLYING THE TOOLS OURSELVES One of the first challenges we faced when organizing the workshops was simply getting everyone in the same room. Coordinating participants from different departments and finding time in their busy schedules proved difficult. However, once everyone was present, the workshops turned out to be very successful. A key decision that contributed to this success was involving an external facilitator. This allowed all participants, including those who convened the meeting, to fully engage in the process. It helped level the playing field and made the workshop more inclusive and effective. After the workshop, we analysed our local context and noted that we already have many strong strategic documents to guide us, such as the municipal environmental plan, the business strategy, the rural development strategy, and Falköping municipality’s cooperation agreement with Visit Hornborgasjön. These are important resources to lean on when working with sustainable tourism. These are important resources to lean on when working with sustainable tourism, However, it also became clear that one of the biggest ongoing challenges is ensuring constant dialogue and regular meetings across departmental boundaries within the municipality. This crosssectoral communication is essential but difficult to maintain in day-to-day operations. One ongoing challenge, however, is maintaining momentum after the workshop ends. People often return to their traditional roles and ways of working, which makes it difficult to sustain the energy and collaborative spirit that emerged during the sessions. THE JOURNEY OF “SELF-DISCOVERY” THROUGH THE UST PROJECT Throughout the UST process, we’ve realized how valuable it is to share our sustainability journey with other municipalities, both nationally and internationally. These exchanges offered powerful learning opportunities—dialogue with others helped us reflect on our own practices, better understand our challenges, and appreciate different approaches. For instance, it became clear that we are not alone in struggling to work across administrative boundaries within our own municipality. Many others shared similar difficulties in establishing lasting cross-departmental collaboration. 29
