Many communities have a vision for a more sustainable future, one where tourism doesn’t just thrive but enriches the municipality through sustainable development. However, many of the issues are not under the direct control of the municipality. In this module, we will explore how municipalities can actively engage stakeholders to turn a vision of a better destination for visitors and residents into reality. Sustainable and regenerative tourism is a complex and dynamic system that involves a wide range of actors, from visitors and hospitality businesses to local residents and community-based organisations. At the heart of it all is the municipality’s ability to actively engage and collaborate with these stakeholders. By creating a platform for dialogue and partnership, municipalities can ensure that tourism development is first and foremost about the enrichment of the lives of those who call the destination home. In this module, we will discuss the importance of partnerships and collaboration in sustainable tourism and explore different models for engaging in sustainable tourism from a municipal perspective. ✓A municipality governs a tourism ecosystem with diverse actors and needs. ✓Active engagement and collaboration with stakeholders is key to sustainable tourism. ✓Create partnerships for a shared view of the role of tourism. The ecosystem is in your hands The tourism ecosystem is a complex and dynamic system that involves a wide range of actors, from visitors and hospitality businesses to local residents and community-based organizations. It is important to understand the whole tourism ecosystem and the different actors involved. At the heart of successful sustainability efforts is the municipality’s ability to actively engage and collaborate with these stakeholders over time. Once the stakeholders are identified, the next step is to create a platform for dialogue and collaboration in order for the partnership to have a shared view of the role of tourism. Being the central point of many win-win relationships is essential for sustainable and regenerative tourism. These relationships are based on mutual trust, respect, and understanding, and aim to create shared value and benefits for all parties involved. However, successful implementation of SDG 17 means more than just promoting win-win relationships. It means facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration among all stakeholders and being the caretaker of the tourism ecosystem. WIN-WIN Relationships Funded by the European Union. Win-win relationships can lead to successful outcomes for all stakeholders, while also caring for the destination. Examples of this can look like: ✓ The municipality partners with local food producers to promote heritage and culture, while the food producers gain access to new markets and a stronger sense of place. ✓ The municipality provides infrastructure, such as biking paths, and a guide company introduces their visitors to the food producers and the landscape. ✓ The municipality and local entrepreneurs inspire and empower local residents to use the bike paths for recreation and buy local products, fostering a stronger sense of pride in their community and acting as ambassadors when meeting visitors.
